Lux Requirement for Soccer Field illumination

Lux Requirement for Soccer Field illumination

For (almost) every sports field, there is a recommended lux levels (how much light) and uniformity (evenness of light). The main deciding factors are how fast is the ball moving and how big is the ball.

For soccer field, the current levels are average 200 lux for training & recreation, average 500 lux for leagues & clubs games, average 750lux for national games. Good practise would be to lean towards 300 lux even if you can’t afford to get the whole way there as 200 lux (remember this is average, not minimum) may mean that the centre is down to 140 or 150 lux.

For every sports field, there is preferred or ideal pole locations, but these positions may only be theoretical if existing poles are going to be used.

For soccer field, the standard format for outdoor greens is 4 poles at 18-22m high mid pitch down the length of the field. This ensures the light can reach the centre of the green and give good uniformity, without having to tilt up the lights much, which can cause glare to the players and neighbours. Another format is to have 4 corner poles which has the same effect but may need to be higher to achieve good light in the centre of the pitch. If the lamp being used has been designed for the purpose, generally 18-22m poles will work well unless lux levels are over 500, in which case higher poles may be needed.
